Curriculum vitae
Roberto Bassani deals with spinal diseases with medical and surgical treatment for spinal traumas, cervical and lumbar disc herniations as well as scoliosis and deformities, thanks to traditional techniques and modern minimally invasive approaches as well as the most advanced technologies.
Academic training
After having obtained the classical high school diploma he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia. In October 1992 he graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia with a score of 110/110 and honors. In the second session of November 1992 he passed the state exam for the qualification to the profession of doctor-surgeon with full marks at the University of Pavia. He is currently enrolled in the register of surgeons in the province of Pavia. In October 1997 he was proclaimed specialist with a score of 50 / 50L at the University of Pavia. Since 1998 he has mainly devoted himself to vertebral surgery. He attended the post-graduate university course as a research doctor in anatomy at the 2nd faculty of medicine of the University of Pavia. He is fluent in the English language.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS:
Complex spinal surgery techniques (revision and anterior approaches) – deformity surgery – Vascular
Surgery. He is frequently called as a "visiting surgeon" in various Italian hospitals to perform complex revision surgeries on the lumbar and thoracic spine through anterior approaches with minimally invasive and traditional techniques. He has performed more than 8000 major spinal surgeries (of which more than 3000 anterior approaches) of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar tracts for the treatment of spinal trauma, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, canal stenosis, cervical and lumbar degenerative disc disease, metastatic tumors of the vertebrae, infections, segmental instability of the spine. He currently performsall surgical approaches to the spine: posterior and combined anterior-posterior as well. It regularly hosts surgeons (fellows) from every Italian region and from abroad to demonstrate the techniques of anterior
approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine and revision techniques in adult deformities. He is
frequently called as a speaker at national and international conferences on topics relating to minimally invasive spinal surgery and complex deformity surgery. He is author of scientific publications in international journals and coordinator of ongoing national and international research projects.
Since
2005 he has coordinated surgical anatomy sessions on cadavers, teaching anterior approach to the spine for fusion (ALIF) techniques to surgeons from various European countries. In 2006-2007 at the Anatomy Laboratory of the "Université René Descartes" of Paris (France) and at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Vienna he was "tutor" in the theoretical and practical course on cadaver organized by the G.I.S. (Italian Society of Spine Surgery) for spinal surgeons in training.
In January 2009 he won “The First Prize Winner at the 13th International ARGOS (European Association of Research Groups for Spinal Osteosynthesis) Spine Symposium in Paris, with a reading entitled “Long distance anterior revision surgery after TDR. Minimal invasive technique”. He was invited in September 2009 and 2014 to the JPSSSTSS (Japan Society for the study of Surgical Technique for Spine and Spinal nerves) conference for masterly lectures on complex techniques in spinal surgery.
In 2014-2015 and 2019/2020 he was professor of minimally invasive techniques in spinal surgery in the "Master of spinal surgery" for Neurosurgeons in the University of Turin. From 2018 he is professor in Orthopedics and Traumatology in the University of Milan teaching:
- Anatomy and biomechanics of the spine
- "minimally invasive approach to the lumbar spine"
- Diseases of the musculoskeletal system
Specific interests are congenital (deformity) and degenerative pathologies of the spine. The study and practice of anterior approaches to the spine and the development of minimally invasive techniques (anterior surgical approaches to the spine, endoscopic thoracic spine surgery). He is the creator of the minimally invasive technique to expose the lumbar spine through the periumbilical (Keyhole Perinavel) approach and of the reduction technique with a double approach for High grade spondylolisthesis (Sled Technique), both published in International journals.
He contributed to develop a system patented in the United States and used internationally (US Patent App.15/044,947- 2016) for the planning and intraoperative execution of spinal deformity correction called "Bendini" and contributed to the design and planning of the "Supine ALIF" anterior retractor by Nuvasive.
Since 2012 he has directed many cadaver labs for “Nuvasive” for teaching fusion techniques with lateral (XLIF) and anterior approaches (ALIF). He has also been a visiting surgeon in many European and EMEA countries as a consultant for different companies for the training of surgeons on anterior and lateral surgical techniques specially in complex operations.
OTHER:
• Obtained ARGOS (France) Training License in Spinal Surgery
In 2020 he participated and won the competition for the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) of the Ministry of University and Scientific Research (MIUR), obtaining the qualification as Associate University Professor in Orthopedics and Traumatology.
